Can Cinnamon Flavored Sabayon Save Gnome?
Gnome 3 fiasco has come and gone, oh wait, it’s still here, but at least people are hacking away at it to make it a bit better. We’ve been seeing apps to help customize the devastation and now Linux Mint has forked the default gnome-shell and started a project that gives you an option of a different shell called Cinnamon. We have introduced the Cinnamon to the limbo repository for testing and I’ve only heard positive things about it from those that have tested it. Sabayon running Cinnamon below:
Here you can see Cinnamon with the menu system open, looks a bit rude at first, but functions quite well.
A bit busy
Pull back and select the application you want
So the great thing about this that I love is the old traditional desktop feel that I am most comfortable in. No huge icons and drilling down through more huge icons to find an application. The menu system gets you were you need to get quickly. Call me old, but I enjoy the simple desktop and hate huge icons. I’m glad to see others feel the same and are actually producing forks and hacks. Gnome devs need to, well I’m not gonna get on that rant or I’ll be writing a book.
So what about the negatives? Well, I’m not gonna say that there is negatives due to the fact that Cinnamon is young and new and is gonna grow quickly with changes to make it better. Like right now the customization abilities are very limited. The gnome-tweak-tool will allow you to make some changes. A trick I found to do was to log into the regular gnome session and use gnome-tweak-tool to make changes and than logout and return to the cinnamon session where most things will stick. You can’t change window borders, but I can live with that for now. Linux Mint has already said that in the next version that customization tools are high priority.
I should clear the air here incase people are scared to screw up their gnome default by installing Cinnamon. When you install Cinnamon it creates a new login session called Cinnamon. So when you are at your login screen, choose Cinnamon from the session to log into it. You can log back into regular gnome by logging out and than choose Gnome in the session. So no fear, you won’t loose nor harm your gnome default session. If you are using lxdm, make sure you have the latest version from limbo repo installed otherwise lxdm can’t start the session.
Sabayon needs to make some changes to it, such as branding the menu button and we will be changing the category it is in now that Gentoo has added it to portage under gnome-extra. There is discussion about an idea of making Cinnamon the default session in Sabayon 8. Remember the regular gnome session will be there also, so don’t go yelling at your monitor we are crazy if we do such a thing, just select Gnome for your session if you are not a Cinnamon fan. I encourage everyone to take a look at it at least once and give it a try. With Cinnamon available, I actually installed Gnome back on to my main system.
Sabayon Linux 5.4RC1 GNOME/KDE {>=20100917-DAILY} Testing Release
Hi everybody,
this is the first time our final release phase is being worked out
publicly
YAY
Let me spend some words on how it works: our staff is going to
“virtually tag” a particular DAILY ISO image version as “Release
Candidate”.
In our case, “Release Candidate” means that some things may or may not
work because they haven’t been tested yet, and these ongoing
iterations are just meant to address this.
This is not a Press Release but just a way to let everybody contribute
to our release plan in Subject.
~~~ Where to get DAILY ISO images?
At http://www.sabayon.org/download you will be able to find DAILY iso
images inside the “iso/daily” directory. Make sure that the .iso image
file version is greater or equal than the target version in the curly
brackets in the subject of this e-mail. Our staffers have direct
access to fresh DAILY ISO images, which are rebuilt every 24 hours.
Unfortunately, due to bandwidth matters, we cannot let everybody
access them faster than the public ISO images sync frequency (see
below).
~~~ How can you help us?
By downloading any of the *{x86,amd64}_{G,K}.iso files, checking it’s
md5sum to make sure your download is not corrupted. Every report MUST
be followed by detailed information in order to help us to spot the
issue. If you are unsure about what logs have to be attached, just ask
us here or on IRC. If your report is incomplete, it will be just
thrown away, feeding the World’s bitbucket.
~~~ What’s the ISO images update frequency?
We sync public ISO images every 3 days.
~~~ What to test?
We have a tracking bug at our Bugzilla:
https://bugs.sabayon.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1797
Don’t comment directly to that bug but rather click on the blocker
bugs to see what has been already reported to not work. Anything you
report on bugzilla related to these testing cycle has to block the bug
at URL above.
If you don’t know how to report things on Bugzilla, then you might not
be the right person in the right place.
~~~ How do I know what specific DAILY version is bound to a specific
Release Candidate?
Just watch this map:
>=20100917 => 5.4RC1
Let the fun begin now!
Sabayon 5.1 RC2 Testing – Limbo xorg-server
Sabayon Gnome 5.1 RC2
Moving right along to the RC2 for testing. This is about 99.99% guaranteed to become the final version. Look for this to hit the servers in about 7-10 days. No fear, we will announce it on the site when it is ready for download.
I don’t know how many ran into an issue after latest updates while running limbo. Xorg-server and nvidia-drivers got masked in entropy and caused a downgrade of both while some packages still pull xorg-server-1.7.1 and caused some API mismatches and there for reaching the desktop was a no go. So what I did was unmask xorg-server and nvidia-drivers, upgraded xorg-server and nvidia-drivers to latest in limbo and than reinstalled my xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard to get my desktop back. I’m not gonna get started on the whole xorg thing, but argh is all I can say. You can unmask packages in entropy via /etc/entropy/packages/package.unmask and just add the package(s) on a new line, like x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers. You mileage may vary pending on graphics card. On gnome, I haven’t noticed any issues with latest limbo stuff in regards to graphics (GeForce 9500 GT) and I even have compiz-fusion running.
If you are running limbo and become absolutely stuck, you can always remove limbo from the /etc/entropy/repositories.conf and do your equo update && equo world to drop down to 5.1 main line, which is more stable.
Sabayon – New Gnome Look?
Alright, we all know that Sabayon Linux is KDE eccentric, but it doesn’t mean we can’t make the gnome side look better. I know some have liked my dark themes that I have posted on the forum as screenshots and have asked for dark themes, so I’ve been slowly working on a nice dark look. There is just so much artwork out there done by many talented people and sifting through it all takes time. I’m not a fan of the 3.5 Red colors, actually burns my eyes. I like Red, but not in over-usage like that. I like to keep with dark neutral colors for as much time as I stare into the screen I don’t need my eyeballs on fire. Below is what I would like to see as a default gnome install.
